Is the Migraine Procedure Right for Me?

Is the Migraine Procedure Right for Me?

When it comes to migraines, lifestyle changes, medications, and other therapies often bring relief. However, some people need more advanced interventions – especially if they experience chronic, crippling migraines that interfere with their quality of life.

The Migraine Procedure, offered here at Expert Pain in Houston, Texas, Ioannis Skaribas, MD, DABA, FASA, is a cutting-edge option that just might help you if you’re one of 1%-2.2% of people worldwide that struggle with chronic migraines.

Also known as the Reed or Omega, the Migraine Procedure dates back to a 1960s theory that set the foundation for modern neurostimulation techniques. The theory proposed that nerves could carry two simultaneous signals, which led to the development of innovative treatments aimed at mitigating pain signals.

Read on to learn more about the Migraine Procedure and how it might help you find relief from migraines.

How the Migraine Procedure works

The Migraine Procedure uses a neurostimulation device implanted under the skin. This device generates mild electrical impulses that compete with the pain signals traveling to the brain.

The competing signal effectively overrides and cancels out the pain message, offering significant relief from migraines.

Candidates for the Migraine Procedure

Ideal candidates are those whose migraines persist despite trying medications, injections, Botox®, steroids, radiofrequency, and other interventional therapies.

Come see Expert Pain if you suffer from migraines that significantly disrupt your daily life. The Migraine Procedure can help when migraines interfere with your ability to work, do normal daily tasks, and enjoy life.

The aim of the procedure is to restore your ability to function by reducing the intensity and frequency of migraines, ultimately enhancing quality of life.

What to expect during and after the Migraine Procedure

Dr.  Skaribas usually recommends patients undergo a trial phase before permanent implantation of the neurostimulator. This involves placing temporary leads to gauge the effectiveness of neurostimulation.

If results are positive, she implants a permanent device consisting of four neurostimulating electrodes under the skin at key nerve sites while you are under general anesthesia. These electrodes connect internally to a rechargeable device, called an implantable programmable generator (IPG) – similar to a pacemaker – which is positioned in the right buttock. She places the entire system under the skin, leaving no external parts visible.

This permanent and reversible migraine treatment is designed for safety and allows you to return to normal daily activities after recovery, without limitations.

Recovery is generally swift, and most patients can return to their normal routines within days. We adjust the device as needed to optimize pain relief.

Benefits and outcomes from the Migraine Procedure

By disrupting pain pathways with controlled electrical signals, many patients find they can resume daily activities that were once disrupted by relentless migraine episodes.

If you have severe, chronic migraines that haven’t responded to other treatments, the Migraine Procedure could be the transformative solution you’ve been seeking.

Reach out to Expert Pain today by phone or this website. We will sit down with you to discuss your options, understand more about the Migraine Procedure, and see if it could be the right way for you to experience fewer migraines.
